MEDICAL CODING
Medical coding is the process of converting patient contacts, diagnoses, and treatments that are documented as healthcare services into standardized numeric and/or alphanumeric codes. The claims for payment or other continuing healthcare services are then sent to Medicare, Medicaid, insurance companies, and other payers using these annotated data.
Examples of typical responsibilities for roles in medical coding include the following:
- Transforming patient information into the appropriate medical code
- Looking for any information gaps in medical records and documentation
- Conducting audits of charts
- Collecting, evaluating, and storing medical records for patients
- Making sure that every writing is grammatically correct
- Following the guidelines and norms for medical coding
