               In the majority of countries, the most often used system for medical coding is the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). Each and every World Health Organization member country adapts the ICD to meet its unique requirements. There are currently six official HIPAA-mandated code sets in use in the US, each with a different function.

Online instruction in medical coding available in Medical Coding Standards:

1. All operations and diagnoses have to be accurately coded in compliance with accepted coding standards.

2. Completing coding tasks on schedule.

3. The ability to recognize and appropriately classify secondary conditions.

4. An understanding of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology

5. Entering each code selection in the patient's file.

6. Familiarity with the pertinent codes and regulations.

7. The ability to research coding issues and provide accurate solutions.

8. Knowledge of databases and coding programs.

9. The ability to maintain productivity and accuracy standards.

10. The capacity to apply the appropriate standards, classifications, and coding norms.
