MEDICAL CODING


          Medical coding occurs each time you see a physician. The doctor records your appointment after reviewing your complaint and medical history to establish the cause of your condition and the best course of action. This paperwork not only acts as the patient's permanent record but also forms the basis for the healthcare provider's payment.

Medical codes are used to standardize that documentation and provide the following information to payers:

The diagnosis for the patient

Treatments, services, or supplies for the patient were necessary because they were medically necessary.

Treatments, support, and supplies provided to the patient

Any extraordinary occurrences or medical conditions that affect these treatments and services

Medical coding is done globally, with the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) being the most often used system. ICD is maintained by the World Health Organization and is updated to satisfy the needs of each member country. There are six formal HIPAA-mandated code sets in use nationwide, each with a different use.
